Hearing is an indispensable tool for animals. It alerts them of danger and helps them to communicate with others of their kind. While most animals have ears, there are some without them, and yet they can still hear. 

Fish and birds are examples of such animals that lack an external ear structure but can detect sound. In this article, we will explore nine animals without ears and the mechanisms they use to hear.

Salamanders are fascinating creatures that are often found in damp areas. With over 500 different species, many of them are fully aquatic while others only venture into the water occasionally. Although they don’t have ears, salamanders are still able to detect sounds in the air as well as from the ground. 

Interestingly enough, they rely more heavily on vibrations that they pick up through their limbs rather than airborne sounds. This means that their inner ears are able to catch sounds that are transmitted through the ground.  

2. Turtles

It’s a common misconception that turtles cannot hear because they lack the outer ear. However, while they rely primarily on their other senses, these shelled creatures are actually capable of hearing sounds. Compared to humans, their hearing abilities are less developed and they can only respond to loud noises. Turtles struggle to capture low-frequency sounds, but their high-frequency hearing capabilities are surprisingly good. And if we examine their underwater hearing, turtles have a remarkable capacity to pick up sounds that would be completely unheard on the surface. 

3. Snakes

Snakes are one of the most fascinating creatures in the animal kingdom. Despite not having external ears, snakes have a unique way of hearing sounds. They are able to pick up sounds through vibrations on the ground, which is connected to the eardrum in their jaw. This ability allows snakes to detect movement or even prey nearby, making them some of the most efficient hunters in the animal world. However, certain high-frequency sounds, like those that come through the air, are not audible to snakes. Recent studies have shown that most snake species can hear sounds in the range of 80 to 600 Hz, which is much lower than the range of frequency that humans can hear.  

4. Frogs

If you’ve ever been near a pond on a warm summer evening, you’ve probably heard the loud croaks and chirps of the frogs. These amphibians are famous for their unique vocalizations, which they use to attract mates during courtship. Despite not having external ears like humans, frogs can hear just as well, if not better, thanks to their inner ears and eardrums.

In fact, frogs can hear sounds up to 38 kHz, which is much higher than what humans can hear. This ability allows them to communicate with one another and produce high-volume sounds without damaging their own eardrums.  

5. Spiders

While we may think of spiders as being silent and potentially stealthy creatures, it turns out that they are actually able to hear. Recent studies have revealed that these eight-legged arachnids lack eardrums, but can still sense vibrations and sounds around them. 

Spiders use the hair receptors on their legs to collect sounds, including those that travel through the air. While they are better at picking up lower-frequency sounds, they can still detect higher-frequency sounds as well. 

This newfound understanding of spider sensory abilities adds to our overall understanding of the animal kingdom and the vast array of ways in which different creatures perceive their surroundings.

6. Worms

Despite their lack of ears, worms are surprisingly capable of detecting sounds through their body! Using their heightened sense of vibration, worms can sense the movements of potential predators lurking nearby.  

Even more impressive is the fact that they can detect these sounds from within the soil or directly from the ground. While they may not have eyes to help them navigate their environment, they do have light receptors which allow them to distinguish the cycle of day and night.

Recent studies have shown that spiders use their hair receptors to collect sounds, even those that travel through the air. This suggests that spiders are much more adept at hearing than we previously thought. However, scientists have also discovered that spiders are better at hearing low-frequency sounds than high-frequency ones. 

8. Crabs

Although many people may assume that crabs do not have any hearing capabilities since they don’t appear to have ears, the truth is a little more complex. While it’s true that crabs don’t have great hearing abilities, they can actually pick up on sounds in a limited range. 

Specifically, crabs can hear low to mid-frequency sounds, but only if they are nearby. To detect sounds, crabs depend on their antennae and sensory hair on their legs to pick up vibrations. However, despite their moderate hearing abilities, crabs rely more heavily on their sense of smell than their sense of hearing.

Crocodiles are often feared for their razor-sharp teeth, powerful jaws, and deadly hunting instincts. What some people may not know, however, is that these fearsome creatures possess impressive hearing abilities despite having no external ears. Instead, crocodiles have openings just above their eyes that lead to their inner ears. 

This means that when submerged in water, these openings close to prevent water from entering their ears, forcing them to rely on water vibrations for auditory information. Crocodiles have been found to be most reactive to sounds in the range of 100-3000 Hz, but some species can detect frequency sounds of more than 8000 Hz! Their hearing is so acute that they can even hear their babies calling from inside their eggs.
